Creating a skin tone of depth!
This student was the only one experimenting with the layering of color. In the second grade we did this in practice and I imagine she may have remembered that lesson which always gives us a thrill!
Take Part Art Festival Logo Contest Award Winner!
It was an outstanding honor when one of my students beat out students from other elementary schools, middle schools and high schools! Deanna is only in the 5th grade!!
Illuminations Project
The initial inspiration for this project was the work of Ahmed Mater I was first introduced to at LACMA last year at their phenomenal "Gifts of the Sultan" exhibition. Ahmed Mater is an artist AND a doctor! The symbolism he achieves in these X-rays he uses are interesting conceptually and visually. I immediately thought of Sun Print paper for the students to get a similar effect. The students were to choose objects that were special, even sacred to them to print.
He colored his paper with tea as Shahzia does, Shahzia Sikanders work is so interesting and in the Art 21 Video she actually demonstrates this technique so we did our version of this kind of painting but with liquid watercolor in a variety of colors.
How often are we able to deflate stereotypes through simple exposure? The Art 21 videos are fantastic for this.

The Verb of the Painting Project.
In this lesson the students first viewed the works of Keith Morrison and expanded on the narrative of his works. From a still life they drew Contour and gestural drawings.
The next session the students viewed the Art 21 video featuring Lari Pittman. We talked about his statement of "creating the verb" within his art and what it means to animate something. The students were then to animate the still life in the classroom. They used tempera paint.

The Verb of the Painting/Keith Morrison
The title comes from a quote from the artist, Lari Pittman. For this lesson I showed a couple segments from his feature on the PBS series, Art 21. To see his work and clip, see the below link. The work above is by the artist Keith Morrison, whom Lari Pittman has much in common with.

Simple Overlapping Primary Color/Shape Project
Ad Reinhardt Value/Color Compositions
This project went through a huge evolution. I was wanting to get across many ideas, organic shape, value, tints and shades, and when I first started doing the project I had the students simply divided their oil pastels by value. The used different kinds of overlapping lines to create organic shape. That idea never changed.
I did this project again with layering color to create tints and shades having the students paint a number of their shapes black first and then have them overlap a color over the black and then in the white space to distinguish value variations. This seemed to laborious.
Scrolling down to the bottom samples, it is seen that the last revise of the lesson simply begins with cut black shapes on white, fewer over lapping line to create organic shape, and then using those wonderful water soluble oil pastels to color shapes in both areas. The students transformed the pastel into paint in this assignment. I had a smaller special ed class keep a black and white version of the project, they had done such a great job with the line cutting. The sample is pictured below as well.

The Ad Reinhardt Masterwork
I saw this image in a magazine last year for his show that was opening in New York. It was the groups of abstract color that was inventively distributed in value areas that stood out for me as a work that may be interesting to the children.
